Position Details

Position Duties and Responsibilities

• Implements new Oracle versions, updates, and patches fixes to the database management systems including data warehouses such as Banner Oracle databases, Data Store and the Enterprise Data Warehouse
• Installs, configures, troubleshoots, and maintains application systems that interface with Oracle and other databases. Implements new versions, updates, and patches fixes to application software systems.
• Implements and configures database instances, partitions, storage, and access.
• Coordinates and monitors system security for the database. Analyzes audit logs and takes appropriate action to address anomalies. Responds to legitimate internal and external requests for security related information.
• Ensures security of Oracle databases and other databases against intruders and malicious activity. Creates and maintains user and system accounts in accordance with college policy and industry best practices for data security. Sets user privileges and access controls within the database environment.
• Troubleshoots and permanently corrects platform problems in a timely manner to provide 24/7 availability of database services. Responsible for managing problem escalation to Oracle and third party support teams as appropriate.
• Monitors and tunes those systems to ensure system integrity and provides high performance, high availability service.
• Designs and implements business continuity and disaster recovery protocols. Operates, monitors and maintains redundant data center platforms for a disaster response.
• Tests disaster recovery protocols and platforms to ensure timely and reliable restoration of critical business activities.
• Develops programs and scripts that automate routine database maintenance, performance tuning and security tasks.
• Assists applications development staff to develop physical database designs, generates the schema, programs rules and stored procedures.
• Advises Application Analysts, programming staff, UNIX and Microsoft system administrators and computer technical staff on advanced technical aspects pertaining to relational databases, data warehousing and related application software.
• Participates in the formal system change management process and is responsible for ensuring that database changes are tested and perform as intended.
• Responsible for the integrity and security of the databases and must be vigilant in protecting the database from unauthorized changes and disruptive system processes.
• Coordinates modifications, upgrades, new implementation and decommissioning efforts with affected system users and documents all activity.
• Performs long range and strategic database planning for the College to ensure adequate storage for record retention and optimum system performance.
• Maintains detailed knowledge of computer hardware and software trends and advancements.
• Optimizes storage hardware performance using index tuning, disk optimization, and other methods.
• Manages large-scale projects regarding relational database management systems.
• Routinely communicates with Information Technology directors and managers to codify institutional expectations into systems specifications for database architectures.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or closely related discipline or equivalent work experience and education/training providing similar knowledge and skills in database design and administration is necessary. ORACLE certification is highly desired, depending on position needs.
• Eight (8) or more years in an enterprise computing environment, of comparable complexity, including five (5) years of directly related, full-time experience in database administration experience beyond degree equivalence is required.
• Working knowledge of Oracle 11g or later versions.
• Thorough knowledge of database concepts and design.
• Thorough knowledge of database utilities, maintenance, performance and tuning, and recovery.
• Thorough knowledge of UNIX Operating Systems concepts.
• General knowledge of UNIX scripting
• Ability to function under minimal direction with close deadlines
• Ability to function under pressure involving after-hour, on-call support and database recovery.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to resolve issues, obtain consensus and provide customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

• General project management skills a plus
• Working knowledge of SQL Server 2008 or later versions.
• General knowledge of Windows Operating System concepts.
• General knowledge of Windows scripting
• Certification in systems and applications to be supported may be considered an equivalency for experience requirements.
